The Oscar Industry: Creative Labor, Cultural Production, and the Awards System in Media Industry

Monica R. Sandler is a film and media historian at Ball State University. Her book, The Oscar Industry, examines the socioeconomic history of the Academy Awards and the development of the movie awards season. She considers the role that prize-giving practices play in building the class, gender, and racial hierarchies of Hollywood. Her writing on awards systems has been published in the Indy Star, USA Today, Cinephile, and the Media Industries Journal.
